FUEL SAVING TIPS

Windshield Repair Can Be Inexpensive And Easy

One of the joys of owning a new car is enjoying the view of the road from a new, clean windshield. Over time, though, debris such as rocks or other items thrown from traffic can cause a chip in the glass. Although a small chip or crack does not seem to be a reason for concern, a broken windshield can eventually lead to a potentially dangerous situation.

That’s why it’s critical for vehicle owners to quickly tackle windshield repairs before a crack turns into a more dangerous problem.

Glass technicians can easily repair small cracks or chips in windshields. Using a clear adhesive resin, many windshield cracks can be repaired for less than $100, and can be done with the help of a professional or, in some cases, by the car’s owner.

Many technicians will drive to the home or office of clients to examine a chipped or cracked auto windshield. Often, these technicians will determine that a windshield with small cracks or chips does not need to be replaced. This can save car owners several hundreds of dollars.

Before car owners make any moves, though, they should first call on their auto insurance company. Many agencies will spend the money to fix their clients’ damaged windshields without charging these clients any deductibles. Again, this move can save car owners hundreds of dollars.

There are several factors that car owners should consider while determining whether a chip or crack can be repaired with a simple resin treatment. The damage cannot be in the driver’s line of sight. The damage must also be relatively minor. Most cracks can be repaired if they are less than 24 inches in length. Cracks longer than 24 inches, though, are not repairable. In these situations, the car owner must have the windshield replaced.

The cost of replacing a car windshield varies depending on the type of car involved. Additional costs may occur if the windshield comes with attached wipers or relies on specialized rubber moldings to hold it in place. The cost of replacing a car windshield includes the replacement glass, installation, adhesive needed to hold the glass onto the car and an intensive cleaning.

Car owners are encouraged to get at least two bids from glass repair shops before taking any actions to fix a cracked or chipped windshield. Many disreputable shops will encourage owners to replace their windshields even when it is unnecessary. Owners should also get a written guarantee of any work that is done. They should also regularly check their windshield for air leaks.
