Why does your Car Insurance Quote Increase after an Accident?

Car accidents usually result in an increase in insurance premiums. Even if you are not responsible, your insurance company will have to incur some costs. There is an increase in car premiums and policy quotes because the accident will be rated against your coverage. There are a number of types of insurance coverage that can include collision, personal injury protection, and medical coverage. If you are found at fault’ for an accident, coverage such as personal liability and collision will cover you, your vehicle, and personal injury to the other driver. Often, if you have just one accident, you will see an increase in your car insurance quote.

Car insurance quotes will increase because you will be considered a high risk driver. The premium will reflect the nature of the accident and the costs associated with the accident. Insurance companies will usually charge ‘points’ to your policy. Depending on the insurance company, these points will be charged to your policy for a certain period of time that usually ranges from three to possibly seven years. If you are in an accident that was your fault, the insurance company will consider that you are a high risk of having accidents in the future and increase your rates. You will also receive higher insurance quotes. The length of time between an accident and your quote and premiums decreasing depends on a providers policies. As well, you may have to pay a higher deductible for the insurance.

Another reason why an accident can increase your premiums when you are ‘at-fault’ in an accident is that there are some companies who will not insure you. When there is less competition for your business, then there is less incentive to give you a good deal. As a result, your insurance quote will be higher. When you add the insurance ‘points’ into the mix, it is easy to see how an accident can become very expensive. If you have a faultless driving record, it is unlikely that your premiums will increase after an accident that was determined not to be your fault.

You can normally expect a rate increase of between 20-40%. This increase is based on the Insurance Services Office’s (ISO) criteria of raising a premium after an accident. According to the ISO, for multi-car policies, the surcharge is 20 percent of the base rate, and for single-car policies it is 40 percent. It is important to remember that there are other factors taken into consideration after an accident such as your age, gender, and driving record. These factors will affect how high the percentage increase will be.

The increase in premiums is not done so that the insurance money can get their money back, but is based on the risk that you may be involved in another car accident. Each insurance company has different policies and standards, but they look at your chances of getting into another accident. The number of accidents that you are involved in also increases your insurance premiums.

Some companies will absolve past accidents after a set period of time has expired. This can be two years, or as much as five years, but the period will vary depending on the insurance provider. Basically, you have to show the insurance company that you are no longer a high risk driver.

The best way to avoid high car insurance quotes is to avoid an accident. You can do this by practicing safe driving. One car accident can seriously impact your car insurance quote and the premium that you will pay.

How can We Prevent Road Accidents from Happening

There is no doubt about it; there are far too many accidents on the road today. Even if you are the most careful and contentious driver on the road there is still a chance that someone will slam into your car causing you, at the very least, some property damage and maybe something far worse.

There is nothing you can do that will guarantee you a constantly safe and totally accident free driving experience, but there are several things that travelers can do to help minimize the amount of accidents that occur on the road every day.

Obey the Traffic Laws The state makes prospective drivers pass a test before they get behind the wheel for a reason, automobiles can be very dangerous if they aren’t operated properly and according to the laws of the road. Speed limits, traffic signs and all other traffic signals should be closely adhered to every single time someone gets behind the wheel, traffic laws are put in place to protect all of the travelers who are sharing space on the road. Following traffic signals isn’t an option, those drivers that treat it as such are usually the ones you see pulled over to the side of the road being handed a violation by officers or off the side of the road due to being involved in an accident after that required roadside assistance.

Pay Attention to the Road and Your Surroundings at all times There can be plenty of things going on in traffic all around you, so it’s crucial that you pay attention to everything going on around you. Driving should be your only focus while behind the wheel. Too many travelers use there commute to eat their breakfasts, drink their coffees, apply their make up and change their outfits and these are often the drivers that are involved in accidents. If you don’t have time to eat, change or apply your make up before you get in the car, it’s probably a good idea to start getting up earlier. Those five extra minutes of sleep won’t help you replace your totaled automobile or help with your rehabilitation following an accident.

Put Down the Cell Phone Our cell phones now are a huge survival tool, they let us make calls, receive and send text messages and e-mails, surf the internet and get directions, watch videos, take pictures and listen to music, among other things, but one place they don’t belong is in your hand while you’re behind the wheel. You simply can’t concentrate on the road and the things going on around you while you’re typing a text message or reading an e-mail. There are laws against using your cell phone while driving in many states now, and those laws are just as important to follow as all of the other laws on the road, you can read your e-mails and send your texts when you get to your destination, but doing so while your driving may not let you get to your destination at all.

Don’t Drive under the Influence Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a major cause of accidents and automobile related deaths. An easy way to prevent this is to not drive while you are under the influence, if you have to drink, and then find another way to get home. Have a sober friend drive you, take a cab or spend the night where you are, but never get behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking.

Many of the accidents that occur are preventable, if people would just pay attention and abide by the laws of the road. By staying aware of your surroundings you can help to minimize the chances that you’ll be involved in an accident, but if you choose to drink and drive or play with your cell phone while you’re driving then you are setting yourself up to become a statistic.

- Gas and battery service: If you run out of gas, roadside assistance includes gas to be brought to you so that you can get to the next gas station and fill up. They should also give your battery a jump if your battery dies.

All of these services should be included in roadside assistance, so make sure that they are. These services will ensure that you do not become stranded in an unfamiliar or dangerous place.

Do your research

So make sure you do your research before choosing an auto club. Make sure that you can use all of the services provided and that you?re not paying for services you can?t use. Everyone needs to have an auto club membership. Everyone just doesn’t need the same package.

Car Accident: What to Do After

by A Nutt

No one really likes to think about having an accident with their vehicle, but if you drive, you`re at risk for ending up in a crash, no matter how minor. Luckily, the majority of car accidents are fairly simple and end up only causing minimal damage to the vehicles, but it`s a good idea to know exactly what you should do in the case of a car accident.

1. Check if anyone is injured. Not all injuries will show up right away, but you definitely want to make sure that everyone involved in the car accident is alright. The first concern, if anyone is injured, is to get medical help. You`ll need to stop any bleeding and call 911 to make sure that help is on the way.

2. Divert traffic, if needed. Often, a car accident that immobilizes a vehicle will end up blocking traffic, so it`s a good idea to ensure that there is a way to divert traffic, either with a flare or traffic cones from an emergency kit, or having someone actually wave passing cars around the broken down vehicle. Hazard lights are also a must if they are still functioning.

3. Report the accident. Your car insurance will be useless if you can`t prove that the accident actually happened. So, an accident report should always be filed with the police even in minor fender benders that don`t seem that serious. You`ll need to make repairs and you definitely want the car insurance company to cover it, so make sure that everything is on paper and signed by the police. Stay on the scene until the accident report has been completely filled out.

4. Don`t admit anything. Immediately after an accident, it`s a good idea to keep your mouth shut as to who was at fault. It`s pretty easy to get angry, particularly if you weren`t the one at fault, but that can lead to a much nastier situation. To prevent problems, it`s best to wait until the police arrive. Also, admitting that you were at fault can cause problems down the road, so keep your mouth shut until you can speak with the police or your insurance company.

5. Write everything down. It`s a good idea to keep a pad of paper and a couple of pens in your glove box. This way you can write down all pertinent information that could be useful later on. This includes names of all parties involved, addresses, phone numbers and email, as well as the license plate number, car insurance information and VIN, since these can all be handy later on if the incident goes to court.

6. File an insurance claim. This should be done as quickly as possible after the accident. For minor accidents, you can even call from the scene and make sure that your claim is in as fast as possible. Not only does this mean you can shorten the amount of time that it takes for your claim to go through, you have the added benefit of police officers there to help you explain the situation and give them information.

Auto insurance is vital to have when comes to accidents. While no one wants to be in a car accident, that doesn`t mean you should ignore the worst case scenario. You could be in the position where you need some repairs on the vehicle, thanks to the accident, and rather than having the huge expenses come out of your pocket, your insurance company will take care of it, something that can be no end of relief when everything else is going downhill.
