South Shields Tramways water car

Malcolm Fraser posted a photo:

South Shields Tramways water car

South Shields Tramways new water car, used for track cleaning, is shown off at the top of Fowler Street in 1913. It had no fleet number until 1930 when it became number 11, after the first 11 was rebuilt and re-numbered 50. The water car was also used as a snow plough and it survived until the trams were abandoned in 1946. It was one of the last to be scrapped but the tank was then used for fuel storage at Dean Road depot and lasted into the twenty-first century.

Sunderland tram 6 and the water car on Roker Terrace

Malcolm Fraser posted a photo:

Sunderland tram 6 and the water car on Roker Terrace

Sunderland tram 6 and crew pose at the terminus on Roker Terrace in 1907. Work had begun on improving the open-top trams in 1904, when the staircase risers were cut away below the steps to improve visibility on the motorman's left. Destination boards were hung in the side windows and stencils were inserted in the destination boxes showing both ends of the route, such as Roker/Circle as seen here, although these fell out of favour after a few years.

The main improvement was the fitting of upper deck saloons above the lower ones and these 'balcony cars' were popular with the public, with outside seats for sunny days and covered ones when it rained. The top deck was for smokers so the side windows were of the 'full-drop' type for maximum ventilation. However, these prevented much in the way of bracing of the framework below them so after March 1907 fixed windows were fitted, with small vent windows above the main ones. As a result, an upper deck full of smokers often became a gas chamber.

This view also includes a glimpse of the water car (number 51) which was very necessary for keeping the tracks clean in those days of mainly horse-drawn traffic. There is a well known photo of the water car being demonstrated in the Wheat Sheaf depot yard but this is the only known photo of it out in use.

HDR TRAIN WATER CAR SUNSET

HDR TRAIN WATER CAR SUNSET

Shot using a Canon EOS 7D camera body and a Canon 100-400mm L with Polarizer to cut rain glare.
Free hand no tripod this lens is amazing to shoot with, without a tripod.
Using 1 RAW image due to the heavy rain fall.
Photoshop used for creating 3 exposures, -1, 0, +1 then Photomatrix for tone mapping.

Sky was shot early in the summer with soft clouds, then placed in the back layer and then airbrushed back. All layers flattened to create 1 layer.

With all of the recent snow we've been having here in the UK, we thought it'd be good to delve into our photographic archive and see how winters were in days gone by...

Cardiff Water Car 131

Ready for maintenance work on the tramway in Beamish Museum town street is the recently restored Cardiff Water Car No.131, built in 1905. These trams were fitted with a large water tank to be used to lay dust, lubricate the rails and - in the case of this one - later used for rail head grinding.
This tram was on short-term loan from the National Tramway Museum to take part in the April "Power from the Past" event at Beamish Museum.
